What are the uses of Lignumstrand in construction?
Lignumstrand is a very versatile product, which can be used in construction in as many different ways that can be designed. The traditional use of its creators, in the US market, is in lightweight framing because of its characteristic stability compared to solid wood. But with today’s new methods of construction, we can find Lignumstrand as a beam, an upright, a purlin, as part of a double T-beam, also in floor slabs, in its box girder variant…
What is the charring rate?
It describes the rate of carbonisation, i.e. the time it takes for an element to burn. It is expressed in millimetres per minute. Coniferous wood has a charring rate of approximately 0.8 mm/min, while at the other extreme, oak has a charring rate of around 0.5 mm/min. Lignumstrand has an excellent ratio of 0.59 mm/min.
Is Lignumstrand a type of OSB?
Absolutely not. OSB is a type of board with a density and mechanical performance making it unsuitable for structural use. Although they look similar on the outside, they are two completely different products. Lignumstrand’s composition is totally homogeneous, the wood strands are arranged longitudinally, resulting in a product with a far superior mechanical performance to OSB, and it is intended for structural use.
